This is the first TV show review on this blog. When i had heard about Sherlock on Twitter i was curious to see how this series was going to be. I had loved Guy Ritchie’s quirky version of the Detective and wanted to see how BBC would script a modern day Holmes. I was not disappointed.
There are 3 episodes in the first season and each runs for about 90 minutes. The scripts are based on the original Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories with a modern take on almost everything. So its interesting to see how the modern day Holmes is a tech genius in addition to a “consultant” to the police. Technology plays a major role in the first episode which i watched. His pipe is replaced by Nicotine patches and i dont see a deer stalker hat. He still plays the violin and much of the originality is retained.
Coming to Dr. Watson , we find a man who served in the Army and had to return back to England after an injury. His quest for a flatmate in London is why he ends up meeting Sherlock.
The first episode is titled ‘A Study in Pink‘ which is loosely based on the original ‘A Study in Scarlet‘ story and is an interesting start to the series. It deals with a series of Impossible Suicides wherein people are found killing themselves using PoisonDr. Who fans will be delighted because its been written by Doctor Who writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The casting is well done and the acting too.
Reading around the web i found that casting Cumberbatch as Holmes was a natural decision, but finding the right Watson was harder for them. But Freeman’s dependable, capable Watson has unlocked this modern Holmes, a man who now describes himself as “a high-functioning sociopath”.
The series has been renewed for s second season and “The game,” as this modern Sherlock puts it, “is on.”
